Girls Varsity Soccer Takes Down Sturgis 4-0

Game Date

STURGIS HIGH SCHOOL: 0

The Bulldogs headed down to Sturgis Wednesday, and came home with a 4-0 Wolverine Conference victory. Otsego recorded two goals in each half against the Trojans, and only required 2 saves from Senior keeper Matti Rayman to keep the shutout. The girls out-shot Sturgis by a count of 28-4 on the night, putting 16 of those on frame. Sturgis' keeper had a busy night, and the Dawgs feel like it could have ended early had their finishing touch been a bit better on the night.

A hot start saw Otsego score through Freshman Rylie Henckel in the second minute off a great lay in by Alison Diller. That was followed up in minute 10 by a penalty kick awarded when McKenzie Milton was hauled down from behind as she headed toward goal in the right side of the box. Alison calmly set the ball and put it past a rooted goalkeeper. Though the Bulldogs continued to attack the Sturgis penalty area, they sent a number of shots just wide of frame and easily within the range of the keeper. Otsego would have to settle for a 2-0 lead at the half.

The second half was much more energetic from the Dawgs, and they took control of the midfield. This allowed them to keep the ball in the Sturgis end for most of the second period. The Bulldog back line did a great job of killing off a few very promising counterattack opportunities mounted by Sturgis, and the outside backs even pushed high and got involved in the wide play. Just 7 minutes in, Diller provided another lovely assist on a slotted ball to fellow Senior Caitlin Kitchen. Cait struck the ball first time and sent a laser beam over the shoulder of the keeper. Rylie would close out the scoring on the night right on the hour mark with a goal again provided by an accurate Alison Diller pass. It took her an extra touch to get the finish by a very aggressive goalkeeper, but she stayed with it and tucked it home for her fifth goal of the season.

Otsego certainly feel like it wasn't their most composed or dominant performance of the season, but stuck with it and got a win and a crucial three points from the game. Alison Diller's goal and 3 assists led the scoring for the night, and some great play in the center of defense shut things down per usual.
