Boys Soccer Earns Draw Against Eddies

Game Date

EDWARDSBURG H.S.: 0

Otsego gave itself every advantage on Wednesday night... Except for the advantage on the final scoreline as their match against the visiting Eddies ended in a 0-0 draw. Shots were 18-7 in favor of the Bulldogs, with an 8-6 advantage in shots on frame. Otsego earned 11 corner kicks through 80 minutes, while Edwardsburg had zero. Those statistics alone speak to the fact that Otsego had the better chances in the match, and they did... They just didn't bury those chances when they were in front of them. Five times in the second half, including one in the final 10 seconds of the match, Otsego spurned clearcut opportunities in the box. The draw does not spell the end of the world as the conference season is still just two matches in, but it was certainly a missed opportunity for a big 3 points.

On the bright side, Jayden Dentler stood tall in net making 6 saves to keep his sheet clean for the 6th time this season. The Bulldog back line limited chances, played tough in 1v1 situations, and covered well for each other all night. Their possession out of the back may have been the cleanest and most precise of any unit on the night. Otsego did a great job of getting the end line and putting pressure on the Eddies, which is what created the advantage in corner kicks. The Bulldogs simply needed to do a better job finishing the chances they were given if they wanted to take the three points.

Credit to Edwardsburg who came in and did an excellent job settling play down and connecting passes. They were certainly the more calm team in possession for the majority of the night, and they seemed to have better ideas when it came to aerial play. While Otsego insisted on putting the ball back in the air time and time again, the Eddies were committed to getting the ball on the deck and finding their central midfielders in good spots. In addition, their center back seemed to have a great read on balls over the top and worked to win every header he could. Otsego kept playing the same looping ball toward him and played right to his strength rather than attacking another space along the Eddies' back line.

The man of the match went to Sophomore fullback Kevin Gibson. He was a spark all evening, and took over the match at three or four points in the second half making crucial clearances and kick starting our attack up the flank. The boys are on the road all next week with visits to South Haven at 5:30 on Wednesday, and Hamilton at 5:45 on Thursday.
